Doubting Thomas or Due Diligence?
I remember right before I became a Christian over 20 years ago, various Christians would sometimes come up to me and start quoting all kinds of Bible verses. And I didn't mean to be disrespectful to them, but my attitude about the whole thing was pretty much this: “First prove to me that this Bible you are quoting from is really the Word of God and then quote me those Scriptures. I'll be happy to listen.”
Well none of them had the proof so I eventually went digging and did the research myself. I found so much proof, a overwhelming mountain of it in fact, so much stunning evidence that the Bible could not possibly have been faked. Then I became a Christian. The logic was simple: Now that I know this book it true and that God wrote it through inspired men, there is no way it was faked by unscrupulous men. At this point I would be an idiot to not do what it says. And it says plainly, clearly and in no uncertain terms that if I want to be forgiven of my sins, saved and end up in heaven after I die, then I need to place my faith (trust) in the person and work of Jesus Christ. It's really that simple.
The Proof is There
Well the proof is there, REALLY there, in fact nearly endless proofs and evidence exists. I don't have time to get into all that now, as I have already written articles on the subject. More importantly, there are top scholars and PhD's who excel in what is called the field of “Christian Apologetics”. No, they are not apologizing for anything, this is simply the field of proving Christianity to be true and there are many excellent books and resources available.
As I have said before, Christianity is not a blind faith and it never was supposed to be a blind faith. God does not ask us to “just take it on faith”. Otherwise He would not have supplied us with so much irrefutable proof that the Bible is true and Jesus Christ is really the Savior of all mankind.
But years later I felt guilty. I thought I had been some kind of “doubting Thomas” and I felt ashamed for doubting the Bible before I became a Christian. Actually, I found out that I was doing exactly what God wants all of us to do – to do our homework, to do our due diligence and get answers! In fact, the first key hurdle for some people to overcome is actually wanting answers and being interested in the truth. There's not much you can do for someone who isn't interested in the truth. Thankfully I was interested, very interested and I still am, and hopefully you are too. And I give 100% credit to God for His drawing grace.
